Located in historic New Jersey Hall, the Economics Department at Rutgers University–New Brunswick combines rigorous teaching and cutting-edge research to advance the understanding of economic issues. Faculty and students engage with economic theory, data, and policy-relevant questions across a wide range of fields.
At the undergraduate level, Economics is one of the university’s most popular majors in the School of Arts and Sciences. Students can pursue a Major or Minor in Economics, an Honors Program involving independent research, and a range of certificate programs that allow them to develop additional areas of focus. The curriculum combines core theory with training in econometrics and quantitative methods and prepares students to think carefully about economic problems and evaluate evidence in a systematic way.
At the graduate level, our M.A. and a Ph.D. in Economics provide comprehensive training in economic theory and econometrics. Graduate students work closely with faculty, and Ph.D. students receive financial support while developing their research. Alumni of the program hold positions at universities, government agencies, and private-sector organizations in the U.S. and abroad.
Economics faculty members conduct research on topics in theoretical and applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Faculty publish in leading journals, contribute to public policy, and participate in national and international research networks.
